Allison Medford, a dedicated intern at Grand Canyon University (GCU), had the extraordinary opportunity to work with the Phoenix Mercury during the WNBA Finals. Her journey began hours before the big game, as she stepped into the dimly lit arena, where the atmosphere was electric. The orange and purple lights illuminated the digital bands surrounding the court, and the crowd's roar filled the air.
Four hours earlier, Medford had arrived at the locker room, ready to tackle the day's tasks. She was an hour ahead of her team, ensuring the training room was spotless and restocking the tape. Her dedication and attention to detail were evident in her approach to even the smallest tasks.
Medford's internship with the Mercury was a unique experience, as she attended all home regular-season and playoff games from April to October. Her role extended to at-home and on-the-road games for the championship series, providing her with a comprehensive understanding of professional sports.
Despite her small stature, Medford's passion and expertise shone through. She was treated like a valued member of the organization, learning from the staff, including preceptor Jariah Fulson, the Mercury's head of athletic training. The players themselves were welcoming and humble, making her feel included.
As the season progressed, so did her responsibilities. Medford's role expanded to include assisting the visiting team, becoming their runner and ensuring they had everything they needed. Her dedication and adaptability were key to her success in this dynamic environment.
The GCU athletic training program, fully accredited since 2024, has produced exceptional graduates like Medford. She has gained invaluable insights into interpersonal communication and the composition of sports medicine teams, learning from her preceptors' interactions with team physicians. Medford's aspirations for a career in healthcare and athletics were fulfilled through this program.
Looking ahead, Medford is eager to apply her newfound knowledge in rugby, supporting injured students in this contact sport. She will also complete a capstone project and prepare for her athletic training board certifications. With a heart for both Division 1 athletics and high school sports, Medford's future holds exciting possibilities.
