The Earth is teetering on the edge of a precipice, with scientists sounding the alarm about a potential "point of no return" that could lead to a catastrophic "hothouse Earth" scenario. This is not a distant threat, but a very real possibility that could unfold in the coming decades, according to a group of researchers who have issued a stark warning about the planet's future.

The world is already experiencing the effects of global heating, with extreme weather events claiming lives and disrupting livelihoods. But the scientists warn that continuing on this path could trigger a series of "tipping points" and "feedback loops" that would lock the planet into a new, hellish climate. This "hothouse Earth" would be far worse than the 2-3C temperature rise the world is currently on track for, and would be unrecognizable from the benign conditions that have supported human civilization for the past 11,000 years.

At just 1.3C of global heating, extreme weather is already taking its toll. At 3-4C, the scientists warn that "the economy and society will cease to function as we know it." But a hothouse Earth would be even more fiery, with global temperatures remaining significantly above 4C for thousands of years, driving a huge rise in sea levels that would drown coastal cities. The "impacts of a hothouse Earth pathway on human societies would likely be massive, sometimes abrupt, and undoubtedly disruptive."

The public and politicians are largely unaware of the risk of passing the point of no return, the researchers say. While rapid and immediate cuts to fossil fuel burning are challenging, reversing course once on the path to a hothouse Earth is likely to be impossible, even if emissions are eventually slashed. This is because the tipping points and feedback loops would have already been triggered, making it difficult to predict when they would occur and making precaution vital.

"Crossing even some of the thresholds could commit the planet to a hothouse trajectory," says Dr Christopher Wolf, a scientist at Terrestrial Ecosystems Research Associates in the US. "Policymakers and the public remain largely unaware of the risks posed by what would effectively be a point-of-no-return transition."

The assessment, published in the journal One Earth, synthesizes recent scientific findings on climate feedback loops and 16 tipping elements, including the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, mountain glaciers, polar sea ice, sub-Arctic forests and permafrost, the Amazon rainforest, and the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc). Tipping may already be happening in Greenland and west Antarctica, with permafrost, mountain glaciers, and the Amazon rainforest appearing to be on the verge, the scientists say.

"Research shows that several Earth system components may be closer to destabilizing than once believed," they conclude. "While the exact risk is uncertain, it is clear that current climate [action] commitments are insufficient."

Prof William Ripple, at Oregon State University, US, who led the analysis, says: "The Amoc is already showing signs of weakening, and this could increase the risk of Amazon dieback. Carbon released by an Amazon dieback would further amplify global warming and interact with other feedback loops. We need to act quickly on our rapidly dwindling opportunities to prevent dangerous and unmanageable climate outcomes."

This is not a distant threat, but a very real possibility that could unfold in the coming decades. The scientists are urging the public and policymakers to take action now to prevent the worst-case scenario, and to be aware of the risks posed by the point of no return.
