During the Memphis Grizzlies' European trip, amidst the backdrop of the NBA trade deadline, Ja Morant addressed the swirling speculation. He stated he would "live with it" if the Grizzlies decided to trade him, as reports suggest he might prefer a move to the Miami Heat.
Morant also addressed the alleged friction with Memphis coach Tuomas Iisalo. He denied any rift, with Iisalo citing Morant's health as the reason for his absence from the lineup. Iisalo clarified, "We are not in the business of commenting on random internet reports. He's progressing in the practices."
Morant, 26 years old, has been sidelined since January 2 due to a right calf contusion. The timeline for his return, and his 19th game of the season, remains uncertain.
The Grizzlies are scheduled to play the Orlando Magic in Berlin and London on Thursday and Sunday, respectively. Morant is listed as questionable for the Berlin game. He asserted that he and Iisalo are on good terms, stating, "I don't think we've had too many ups and downs. That's just y'all on the outside looking in thinking that."
But here's where it gets controversial... Morant's current contract, a five-year, $197 million deal, extends through the 2027-28 season. He's eligible for a three-year, $178 million extension next summer. Without an extension, any team acquiring Morant at the February trade deadline would be responsible for the remainder of his existing contract: the balance of his $39.4 million salary for the current season, $42.1 million next season, and $44.9 million for the 2027-28 season.
Drafted as the No. 2 overall pick in 2019, Morant's playing time has decreased this season, averaging a career-low 28.3 minutes, along with 19 points and 7.6 assists per game.
And this is the part most people miss... In his 325 career games, Morant has averaged 22.4 points, 7.4 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 1 steal per game.
