Mirra Andreeva & Diana Shnaider's Epic Australian Open Comebacks! | 2026 Highlights (2026)

Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider: Overcoming Early Hurdles at the Australian Open

Imagine the pressure: two rising stars, Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider, facing incredibly tough opponents right from the start at the Australian Open. Both found themselves a set down in their opening matches, a situation that could have easily derailed their tournaments. But they didn't falter. They fought back with determination and skill, showcasing their mental fortitude and talent.

Andreeva and Shnaider, friends off the court, were handed some of the most challenging first-round draws. They passed their tests within minutes of each other on Monday evening at Melbourne Park. Andreeva, seeded 8th and fresh off a dominant performance in Adelaide where she clinched her fifth WTA title, faced Donna Vekic. Shnaider, seeded 23rd, went up against Barbora Krejcikova.

Andreeva's match against Vekic was a true test of resilience. Vekic, a former top player, came out strong, taking the first set 6-4. But Andreeva, displaying the form that had made her a champion in Adelaide, responded with incredible focus. She then won the next two sets, 6-3, 6-0, in a stunning display of skill and composure, finishing the match in 1 hour and 54 minutes.

Shnaider's match was equally gripping. She faced a barrage of powerful shots from Krejcikova. Shnaider managed to secure a hard-fought victory, winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, after 2 hours and 12 minutes of intense play.

Andreeva's victory in Adelaide was particularly impressive, as she didn't drop a single set throughout the tournament. This victory set the stage for her Australian Open performance. Vekic, despite her lower ranking, proved to be a formidable opponent.

In their previous encounter, Vekic had pushed Andreeva to the limit. The first set saw Vekic's aggressive play, but Andreeva remained composed, using sharp angles and confident net play to turn the tide. From 2-2 in the second set, Andreeva dominated, winning 10 of the next 11 games to secure her victory. In the second round, Andreeva will face Maria Sakkari, another former major semifinalist, marking a highly anticipated match-up.

But here's where it gets controversial...
