Mayor Zohran Mamdani Defends Appointee Cea Weaver Amidst Social Media Backlash
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced scrutiny over one of his appointees, Cea Weaver, following the revelation of her controversial past social media posts. Weaver, a 37-year-old tenant organizer and democratic socialist, was appointed to the Office of Tenant Protection on the day of Mamdani's inauguration.
Weaver's social media history includes strong views on housing issues. In a 2019 post, she labeled home ownership as 'a weapon of white supremacy' and advocated for the seizure of private property. Another post from 2022 called for taxing the wealthy, investing in public goods, halting evictions, and funding safe, stable public housing.
Mayor Mamdani defended Weaver, emphasizing her commitment to tenant rights and the stability of New York City. He stated, 'My focus as the mayor of New York City is to deliver stability in the city. And we know that one critical pathway to that stability is home ownership.'
However, the controversy arises from Weaver's past anti-Semitic posts, which led to the resignation of the appointments director last month. Mamdani drew a distinction between the two situations, stating, 'I accepted Kat Da Costa's resignation. Cea Weaver is someone that we hired to stand up for tenants across the city based on the track record that she had.'
Weaver expressed regret for her past tweets, stating, 'You know, those are certainly regretful tweets and not something that I would say today.'
Critics, such as Ann Korchak from the Small Property Owners of New York, express concerns about Weaver's appointment. Korchak believes that solving housing problems requires dialogue with all stakeholders, including landlords and property owners.
Kathryn Wylde, the leader of the city's largest business group, the Partnership for New York City, also questioned the appointment, asking, 'Who are the other people that are going to be at the table talking about the interests of owners, the interests of financial investors, as well as the tenants?'
The debate surrounding Weaver's appointment highlights the challenges of balancing diverse perspectives in public office and the ongoing discussion on the role of social media in shaping public perception.
