OC Transpo's Bus Cancellations: What You Need to Know! (2026)

A recent week of chaos for OC Transpo has left Ottawa's bus system in disarray, with some of the city's busiest routes suffering the most cancellations. This has sparked calls for urgent action from city councillors, highlighting a critical issue that needs immediate attention.

The Nightmare Week for OC Transpo

From January 4th to 10th, a severe bus shortage forced OC Transpo to cancel an average of 6% of all scheduled trips. However, certain popular routes experienced far higher cancellation rates, causing significant disruptions for commuters.

Routes like 6, 7, and 98, which are vital for downtown commuters, topped the list of cancellations. Councillor Ariel Troster, representing the downtown area, described the situation as "unacceptable." Councillor Shawn Menard, whose ward relies on these routes, echoed the sentiment, stating that residents are rightfully angry and frustrated.

"It's a nightmare for commuters. They're waiting over an hour for buses that just don't show up," Menard said.

OC Transpo acknowledged that multiple consecutive trip cancellations are a last resort, but the recent bus shortage has pushed them to this extreme measure. And the problems don't end there.

A Multifaceted Crisis

On top of the bus cancellations, OC Transpo is now facing issues with its O-Train service. The agency has announced the removal of train cars from Line 1 due to a critical component failure, causing further disruptions and crowding on trains and platforms.

Councillor Marty Carr, whose ward includes several affected routes, emphasized the need for a collective effort to address the crisis.

"This is a city-wide issue that requires all hands on deck. We can't have our residents suffering like this," Carr stated.

Routes 5, 6, 41, 44, and 98, which run through Carr's ward, experienced cancellation rates above the system-wide average. OC Transpo explained that frequent routes are naturally more affected during system-wide issues, as they have a higher number of scheduled trips.

Controversial Solutions and a Divided Response

Councillor Menard called for immediate action, proposing the purchase of more used buses and suggesting the city should second mechanics from other departments to transit. He likened the situation to an emergency water main repair, emphasizing the critical nature of the service.

However, Councillor Carr disagreed, arguing that the proposed solutions are impractical. OC Transpo mechanics require a specialized license, and the city relies on them for essential services like emergency vehicle maintenance and snow clearing.

"We can't compromise on these critical services. It's a delicate balance," Carr said.

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe acknowledged the urgency of the situation, stating that OC Transpo is working tirelessly to improve bus reliability. He emphasized the need for patience, as there is no quick fix to such a complex issue.

"It's a challenging time for our transit system, but we're making progress. We ask for the public's understanding and support as we work towards a better, more reliable public transit system," Sutcliffe concluded.

And this is the part most people miss: the debate over the best course of action to address this crisis. What do you think? Should OC Transpo focus on purchasing more buses, or is there a better solution? Share your thoughts in the comments!
