Unraveling Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome
TTTS, a rare disorder, occurs in about 1 in 10 to 15 identical twin pregnancies, impacting approximately 300 to 400 pregnancies annually in the UK. The condition arises from abnormal blood connections in the shared placenta, leading to one twin receiving too much blood while the other receives too little. If left untreated, both twins face the risk of heart failure, organ damage, and even death. Currently, the only treatment option involves an invasive procedure where a fetoscope is inserted into the womb to seal the abnormal blood vessels with a laser beam, carrying risks such as miscarriage and pregnancy complications.
The Promise of Sound Wave Therapy
The first human feasibility study, involving 10 early-onset TTTS cases between 12 to 17 weeks of gestation, utilized Doppler ultrasound to locate the small blood vessels. Researchers then employed HIFU, beaming high-energy sound waves from a machine positioned outside the body, to heat and obstruct these vessels, restoring blood flow balance between the twins. The procedure was successful in blocking the blood vessels in 90% of cases, with no negative side effects observed in the mothers or babies.
