The photographer, Charvet Drucker, captured this extraordinary encounter on video, offering a unique perspective on the intricate dynamics of marine life.
Drucker, an experienced wildlife photographer, was on a whale-watching trip near her home in the Salish Sea when she spotted a pod of at least eight orcas. Their coordinated movements and powerful tail slaps indicated a hunt was underway.
Using her zoom lens, Drucker spotted the seal, desperately trying to escape the orcas' grasp. One of her photos captures the seal's daring leap, flying above the frothing water, a moment that seemed to seal its fate.
But as the orcas closed in on the boat, Drucker and her group realized the seal's fate was intertwined with theirs. In compliance with wildlife boating regulations, they had cut the engine, creating a tense standoff.
The seal, in a bold move, clambered onto the swimming platform at the stern of the boat, claiming it as its temporary sanctuary. Wildlife regulations prohibited any interference, but Drucker, captivated by the scene, began filming.
"You poor thing," Drucker can be heard saying, her voice filled with empathy. "Stay strong, buddy."
And stay strong the seal did. The orcas, not ones to give up easily, employed a clever strategy. They lined up and executed staggered dives, creating waves that rocked the boat, attempting to dislodge the seal. This "wave-washing" technique, documented by scientists since the 1980s, showcased the orcas' intelligence and determination.
The seal, resilient and resourceful, managed to hold on, sliding off the platform only to climb back on. After a tense 15 minutes, the orcas swam away, their mission unfulfilled.
Drucker, who has witnessed orcas feast on seals before, admits to being a supporter of these majestic creatures. "I'm Team Orca, always," she says. "But in that moment, I couldn't help but root for the seal."
The orcas involved in this hunt are known as Bigg's or "transient" orcas, renowned for their diverse diet and robust health compared to their salmon-focused "resident" counterparts, who face the threat of endangerment.
