Severe Storms Threaten Brisbane: What You Need to Know (2026)

Brisbane is bracing for possible severe storms that could unleash large hail and damaging winds over the course of tonight and tomorrow.

The areas most likely to experience the brunt of this weather are situated just west of Brisbane and within the hinterlands between the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. However, it’s important to note that several suburbs within Brisbane itself may also see significant rainfall.

Senior meteorologist Felim Hanniffy from the Bureau of Meteorology shared insights on the situation, stating, "If severe storms materialize, they could bring large hail, intense winds, and heavy rain." He emphasized that while the primary risk is focused on the more inland areas, there remains a possibility that the storm activity could extend towards coastal regions as well.

Hanniffy further noted that in certain locations, rainfall could reach up to 50 millimeters. In Brisbane's hardest-hit suburbs, a maximum of 20 millimeters of rain is anticipated, although some neighborhoods may receive considerably less.

As for temperatures, while a slight decrease in humidity is expected, levels will still be elevated, with daily highs projected to exceed 30 degrees Celsius throughout next week. "This level of humidity is more characteristic of Far North Queensland, and when combined with the heat, it creates additional instability in the atmosphere. This is why we’re seeing a heightened risk of severe storms today," Hanniffy explained.
