The Technology Subdivision is divided into two units:
- Policy and Strategy Unit: Focuses on developing policies and strategies to promote climate technology.
- Support and Implementation Unit: This is where you come in! This unit focuses on the practical implementation of technology transfer initiatives.
Your Role: Leading the Charge
As the Programme Management Officer, you'll lead the Support and Implementation Unit, reporting to the Technology Subdivision Manager (P-5) and working under the guidance of the MOI Division Director (D-1). Your core mission? To ensure the Technology Mechanism, particularly Article 10 of the Paris Agreement (which focuses on technology development and transfer), is implemented effectively. You'll be a key player in intergovernmental negotiations and support countries on all things technology-related, driving global cooperation to strengthen climate action.
What Will You Be Doing?
Your responsibilities will be diverse and impactful:
- Supporting Intergovernmental Processes: Providing strategic advice and guidance during climate negotiations, drafting key documents, and supporting presiding officers. This is where your negotiation skills will shine!
- Ensuring Effective Operation of the Technology Mechanism: Working closely with the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) and the Technology Executive Committee (TEC) to foster collaboration and support their work. And this is the part most people miss... Understanding how these different bodies work together is crucial to effective climate action.
- Strengthening Stakeholder Engagement: Building partnerships with governments, UN agencies, research institutions, and other stakeholders. Resource mobilization will be a key aspect of this.
- Coordinating Data and Knowledge Management: Overseeing the TT:CLEAR technology transfer clearinghouse, expanding data availability, and ensuring it's a reliable source of information. This includes improving data coordination across the secretariat on issues like adaptation, mitigation, and even artificial intelligence.
- Technical Leadership and Staff Management: Leading the Support and Implementation Unit, managing performance, and fostering a collaborative environment.
What Makes You the Ideal Candidate?
The UNFCCC is looking for someone with:
- Expertise: Deep understanding of climate technologies, project management, and intergovernmental processes.
- Experience: At least seven years of progressively responsible experience in relevant fields, including five years leading international teams and developing technical documents.
- Skills: Strong analytical and drafting skills are essential.
- Education: An advanced university degree in environmental science, economics, engineering, development studies, or a related field (a first-level degree with significant additional experience may be considered).
- Languages: Excellent command of English is a must. Knowledge of another UN language is a strong plus.
