The quest for mineral deposits just got a major upgrade! Recent research has revealed a surprising connection between mineral deposits in Western Australia, challenging long-held geological beliefs. Matthew Demmer, a PhD student at The University of Western Australia, led a study that has the geology world buzzing. Published in Nature Communications, the research explores hydrothermal and magmatic deposits in the ancient Yilgarn Craton. These deposits were traditionally believed to have formed independently due to distinct processes.
"What if we're looking at it all wrong?" Demmer and his team asked. They decided to investigate the commonalities between these seemingly unrelated deposits. And their findings? Astonishing!
The study focused on hydrothermal gold deposits in Kalgoorlie and Kurnalpi, and magmatic palladium-platinum-nickel deposits in the South-west Terrane. The results showed that these deposits formed simultaneously and shared similar isotopic and metal compositions, all linked to a metal-rich mantle.
This discovery turns conventional geology on its head! It suggests that these mineral deposits have a shared origin, stemming from a mantle enriched with metals and volatiles. This challenges the standard approach of studying single deposit formations to find new deposits.
Demmer proposes a new strategy: "Let's shift our focus. Instead of solely studying individual deposits, let's understand the processes that enrich the mantle. This could revolutionize how we explore for minerals, making it more efficient and sustainable."
