World Diabetes Day 2025: Awareness Drive at Chandigarh PGI | Diabetes Facts & Tips (2025)

Diabetes: A Global Health Emergency

The world is facing a diabetes pandemic, and the numbers are staggering. But what does this mean for the average person? How can we tackle this growing crisis?

On November 16, 2025, the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India, took a stand against this disease by organizing an awareness drive in collaboration with diabetes associations. This event, marking World Diabetes Day, aimed to educate and empower patients and the public.

Here's the shocking reality: The International Diabetes Federation reveals that a tenth of the global population suffers from this condition. In India, the numbers are particularly concerning, with 77 million diabetics in 2025, expected to soar to 134 million by 2045.

But what exactly is diabetes? Doctors define it as a metabolic disorder where the body struggles to control blood sugar due to insulin-related issues. High blood sugar, if left untreated, can wreak havoc on vital organs, including the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves. While genetics, environment, and lifestyle play a role, the good news is that it can be managed effectively.

World Diabetes Day, a tribute to insulin co-discoverer Sir Frederick Banting, serves as an annual reminder of the importance of awareness and prevention. This year's theme, 'Diabetes and Well-being', was brought to life by a team of experts. Dr. Linta Thomas educated attendees about the various types, symptoms, and treatments, emphasizing the importance of insulin therapy. Dr. Benjamin shed light on the complications and the critical role of self-care, while Dr. Sunil Mishra focused on lifestyle and dietary adjustments.

And here's where it gets controversial: Are we doing enough? Dr. Prabhat Rijal warned about hypoglycemia, a potential complication, and Dr. Varun discussed diabetic foot ulcers, a severe consequence of untreated diabetes. Dr. Soham Mukherjee provided preventive foot care advice, and Nursing Officer Mrs. Sabpreet Kaur demonstrated proper insulin injection techniques, ensuring patients are well-equipped to manage their condition.

This event was a crucial step in the fight against diabetes, but the battle is far from over. With the numbers rising, it's time to ask: How can we collectively address this global health crisis? What innovative solutions can we bring to the table? Share your thoughts and be part of the solution.
